This was posted in the 4 June 2005 issue of the Orlando Sentinel. The question that was posed was: What have you been doing to prepare for this years hurricane season? Since I didn't want to give the obligatory response of "stockpiling batterys and booze" I decided to voice my opinion.
Since September of last year I have been busy teaching my students about the dangers of price controls. I have been meticulous in ensuring that they understand what happens when prices are not allowed to rise with demand. I am doing this in hopes that maybe; just maybe, we will finally get to see the power of a free market. Maybe this year we will get to see a more effective distribution of products based on a subjective value that reflects that represents current events rather than an objective price that was set in the past. Maybe this year we will be free from government mandated product shortages that are masked under the guise of “price controls that protect the consumer”.
